Why robots are ready for artisans right now

Jan 8, 2021

The technological revolution is advancing with giant steps. While the industry is already experiencing a digital transformation, the upheaval for skilled trades is just around the corner. What does that mean for you as an artisan?

“Industry 5.0” is the term some use to describe the recent technological revolution that allows humans to work alongside robots and other intelligent machines. The development helps people work more efficiently and effectively by using advanced technologies.

In the past, robots often performed tasks that were dangerous and physically demanding. However, the goal of new technological developments is to combine the intelligence of humans with the computational capabilities of robots to achieve optimal results in delicate areas. Simply put, humans contribute their creativity, while robots contribute their energy and accuracy to get the job done. This combination is the future of work.

At the moment, there is no technology that can replace the brain as the engine of human creativity, and there most likely won’t be in the near future. On the other hand, humans are currently unable to work monotonously and with high precision for long hours like robots. As a result of the limitations of both parties, opportunities for positive collaboration are being created. Robots are now being used beyond the normal factory floors. They are working with artisans such as bakers, welders, carpenters and even farmers – in other words, people who perform authentic occupations that always require a touch of human creativity.

In carpentry, for example: While the carpenter develops the idea for the design and structure of the project to be performed, the robot performs all the tedious work necessary to assist the carpenter. This can include moving heavy components from one location to another, accurately measuring and applying adhesives, and properly placing components. This way, the carpenter has to do very little of the physically demanding work.
Beyond just manufacturing, the potential applications across different trades are countless. Recently, cobots (collaborative robots) have been seen performing choreography with dancers and also creating artwork with artists. At a Wandelbots event, the TracePen was used to teach robots to accurately draw the shape of Saxony. With the TracePen, there are endless possibilities for the future of work.

Since there are still very few use cases for this type of “Industry 5.0,” the early adopters can actively develop strategies to integrate this revolution into their business models.

The artisans who are able to recognize the unique opportunities available now and creatively seize them can reap the increasing benefits as this revolution continues to evolve.
